Car-less Commuting in Southern California: Doable? YES!

For 20 years Dorothy Prioroda has been taking San Bernardino METROLINK #308 to and from work... every day! Why? "Because, I love it," she says. For her it's convenient and cost-effective. It costs her around $85 every month.

Good reason to ditch the car. Sitting a few seats away, Martha Hederson feels the same way. Says Henderson, "I used to commute, but there's just so much traffic anc congestion. By the time you get to work you're stressed." You hear a lot of that on this train where, from time to time, you'll spot a passenger snoring. It's the rhythm of the wheels clickety clacking along the tracks.

For some, these can be short trips. For others, like Nikho Walker, it can take time. Each way, he travels 90 minutes on the train and another 30 on his bicycle to get to and from school.

The train is just component of Southern California's transit system.

1.4 million people daily ride METRO's light rain, subways and busses. For car-owners Beatriz and Joe Ledesma the best transportation is the Red Line. For some, it's the Gold Line, Blue Line or maybe even the new EXPO Line to the beach. The new leg of the EXPO line is the second new line opening this year. The Gold Line is the other one. Interestingly, this is the first time two new lines have opened in one year.

For some, that could be viewed as progress in a city where public transit is continually growing. Says METRO's Dave Sotero, "we're trying to create a World Class transportation system in Los Angeles."
