A new way to save horses from wildfires
LOS ANGELES, CA (FOX 11) - As we've seen - not just humans affected by these wildfires- pets and livestock are threatened as well. And a Los Angeles woman has come up with something that she hopes will help horses survive these deadly blazes.
It's called Equisafe... a fire coat for horses. It's the idea of Dalia MacPhee. MacPhee is a clothing designer and a passionate equestrian. After 46 horses were killed in the Lilac Fire last year in San Diego County she thought there must way to increase safety for horses.
She took the idea of a horse blanket and constructed one from firesafe Nomex to come up with Equisafe. Nomex is the same material used for the clothing firefighters where.
She says horses often get burned on their backs. That's where the coat can help. She also says their eyelashes get burned. So, she's also created a head covering also made of Nomex. Both sold separately.
