Author Da'shaun Harrison knows all about that, and has written a powerful new book called, Belly of the Beast: The Politics of Anti-Fatness as Anti-Blackness.

Garfield High School hosted LAUSD's Welcome Back to School Opening Address. It was a wonderful event filled with inspiring moments. Like Della Dragon's poem about coming back to in-person learning. Della is a senior at Hamilton High, and she perfectly captured the anxiety, the excitement, and the uncertainty of so many students heading back to class.

She became deeply moved by the stories of the individuals she met. Laura joined us to discuss her project.

Author Jaime Lowe talks about an inmate firefighting program where women risk their lives for less than five bucks a day, plus a dollar an hour when they are actually on the fire line. The book is called Breathing Fire: Female Inmate Firefighters on the Front Lines of California’s Wildfires.

Because of several challenges brought on by the pandemic, some are facing impossible choices. Melissa Panzer is from the nonprofit media company Working Nation. The group raises awareness about the challenges in the workforce. She joined Good Day LA to talk about some of the concerns she is hearing.
