The U.S. announced Monday that American forces have cleared a route that will allow ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz and get around Iran’s effective closure of the vital shipping lane.

A reported proposal by Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the U.S. lifting its ongoing blockade and ending the war. However, it was another apparent condition of the deal that had Secretary of State Marco Rubio telling FOX News on Monday that the U.S. would not accept.

A new round of peace talks between top U.S. and Iranian officials remains elusive as Pakistani leaders continue working to get both countries to return to the bargaining table.

Pakistan is continuing to mediate between the United States and Iran, with indirect ceasefire talks still alive despite mounting tensions between the sides.

Amid the stalled negotiations with Iran, the president said the Iranians sent over a new peace proposal, but that it “could have been better,” and rejected it.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be heading to Pakistan to meet with Iran officials for peace negotiations.

The White House confirmed Wednesday that the ceasefire is not indefinite and would likely only hold for three to five days.

The war with Iran has led the U.S. military looking to increase its spending for next year to billions on drones, air defense systems and fighter jets.
