Kids all over Orange County are heading back to school next week. Like all other children in California, they will have to wear masks. The Orange County Board of Education, which oversees more than three thousands students, voted this week to sue Governor Newsom over his K-12 mask mandate. Mari Barke, the President of the Orange County Board of Education joined us to discuss.

L.A. City Council just approved an ordinance banning homeless encampments from certain areas of the city, including sidewalks. So, what happens to the people living in those encampments? Rev. Andy Bales, President of the Union Rescue Mission, joined us to discuss.

We see it now in so many communities, streets lined with tents and cardboard boxes. Laura Hand who was motivated after volunteering regularly at the Downtown Women’s Center and Midnight Mission directs a new docu-fiction film called “The Tent Mender”. She became deeply moved by the stories of the individuals she met. Laura joined us to discuss her project.

Earlier this week, L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer raised a red flag to county leaders stating we need proof of vaccinations at all Los Angeles county restaurants, gyms, and theaters. There are several ideas being considered. Mike Feuer joined us to discuss why a vaccine mandate is needed, and why the idea is getting some push-back.

Author Jaime Lowe talks about an inmate firefighting program where women risk their lives for less than five bucks a day, plus a dollar an hour when they are actually on the fire line. The book is called Breathing Fire: Female Inmate Firefighters on the Front Lines of California’s Wildfires.

COVID has had a huge impact on working moms. The labor department says from January of 2020 to January of this year, the number of working moms with kids under 18 dropped by 1.6 million. Because of several challenges brought on by the pandemic, some are facing impossible choices. Melissa Panzer is from the nonprofit media company Working Nation. The group raises awareness about the challenges in the workforce. She joined Good Day LA to talk about some of the concerns she is hearing.

Tonality is a local choral ensemble representing diverse cultures and ethnicities throughout Los Angeles. Through song, they tackle themes like immigration, homelessness, prison reform and social justice. Alexander Lloyd Blake, the founder and artistic director for Tonality joined us on Good Day LA.

Arul Mathur is a high school senior in Northern California. After he was nearly forced to evacuate his home because of a nearby wildfire, he decided he might be able to help. He designed an innovative fire suppression device called F.A.C.E. He put it on Kickstarter, and it funded in one day.

The the world's most elite female athletes are proving over and over again that they are incredibly talented, and incredibly fierce. Their skills are on display at the Olympics, but how the women are being displayed has become a controversy. The Wall Street Journal's Rory Satran talks about how female athletes are fighting back against sexist uniforms and changing the status quo.

Local and national anti-hunger and child nutrition advocates will come together at PHFE WIC?s 8th Street clinic today to highlight the importance of federally-funded food programs. Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, a national nonpartisan nonprofit organization, is visiting Los Angeles as part of an 8,000-mile coast-to-coast journey this summer to shine a light on the continuing national hunger crisis, to meet with those working on the front lines of hunger, and to advocate for long-term, public policy solutions to food insecurity. He joined us to talk about the problem of many people not getting enough food.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11, a group of firefighters and retired firefighters are about to take a three thousand mile journey across the country-on bikes! Their epic road trip will begin at Santa Monica pier, and end 40 days later at ground zero in New York. Along the way, they also hope to raise awareness of firefighting related illnesses including cancer, mental health, and severely wounded veterans. Steve Winter, a retired Battalion Chief with Ventura County Fire Department, is participating in the ride.
