Protests demanding closure of migrant detention camps scheduled for Southland

LOS ANGELES (FOX 11) - Demonstrators across the country, including in Los Angeles, are converging Tuesday on the offices of congressional leaders to demand that detention camps holding immigrant children and their families be closed.

The advocacy group Move On is inspiring the protests and encouraging demonstrators to gather outside the offices of U.S. senators and members of the house to demand the camps be closed. Protestors are taking advantage of the fact that congressional leaders are back in their districts to celebrate the July 4th holiday.

Here in the Southland protests are scheduled to begin at noon at the following congressional offices.
-- Rep. Karen Bass, 4929 Wilshire Blvd., suite 650, Los Angeles;
-- Rep. Adam Schiff, 245 E. Olive Ave., suite 200, Burbank;
-- Rep. Brad Sherman, 5000 Van Nuys Blvd., suite 420, Van Nuys;
-- Rep. Tony Cardenas, 9612 Van Nuys Blvd., suite 201, Panorama City;
-- Rep. Judy Chu, 527 S. Lake Ave., Pasadena;
-- Rep. Gil Cisneros, 1440 N. Harbor Blvd., suite 601, Fullerton; and
-- Rep. Katie Porter, 2151 Michelson Drive, suite 195, Irvine.

The protests come one day after a congressional delegation visited some of the facilities along the border and reported migrants being held in inhumane conditions, including some being forced to drink water from a toilet bowl, a charge that U.S. Border Patrol Chief of Operations Brian Hastings says is untrue.

In addition to the Move On protests, other groups scheduling protests for today include: United We Dream, American Friends Service Committee and Families Belong Together.
