Little Mountain Fire destroys homes in San Bernardino

A wind-driven brush fire that threatened some homes and burned others in San Bernardino sparked Monday evening in the area of Kendall Drive and Little Mountain Road. The fire is being called the Little Mountain Fire.

Dozens of firefighters worked overnight to monitor any potential flare-ups and prevent the fire from spreading. Containment reached 80 percent by Tuesday morning.

At least nine homes were damaged or destroyed by the blaze, fire officials said.

The fire burned at least 17 ares and getting a handle on the fire was complicated for crews due to the weather and topography, officials said.

The high wind pushed the fire down into homes and caused an immediate threat, according to San Bernardino County Fire officials. Aerial footage from SkyFOX showed several structures on fire.

Road closures were in place at Edgerton Drive and Pershing Avenue.

No information regarding evacuations was immediately known. A temporary shelter has been set up at Cajon High School located at 1200 W. Hill Drive in San Bernardino. Residents were asked to enter the east lot and report to the gymnasium.

There were also downed powerlines area, which added to the difficulty of fighting the flames. Southern California Edison says more than 1,000 customers in the area were temporarily without power, which was later restored. However, an estimated 46 customers remained without power. It's unknown when power would be restored, but a fire official anticipated the power would be restored for those customers on Tuesday.
