Child playing with gun shoots self in South L.A.

A child playing with a handgun Friday evening in South Los Angeles injured himself and was rushed to the hospital, investigators said.

The incident happened at a home in the area of Denker Avenue and W. 123rd Street shortly after 6:00 p.m. The gun belonged to the child's father, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Authorities say the boy is about six years old. The condition of the child is unknown at this time. It's unclear how the child got ahold of the gun but the Sheriff's Department is currently investigating the incident.
