One killed in multi-vehicle crash on Pomona Freeway in Whittier

One person was killed Thursday night in a fiery, three-vehicle crash that blocked four lanes of the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Whittier.

The crash occurred just west of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway interchange about 10 p.m. and prompted the closure of the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 lanes of the freeway until at least 11 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

At least one of the vehicles involved caught fire. The driver was able to escape the burning vehicle, but suffered multiple burns, the CHP said.

One person involved in the crash was declared dead on scene, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Details of the crash were not immediately available.

Traffic was being diverted off the freeway at Crossroads Parkway.

At least 50 vehicles stuck between Crossroads Parkway and the San Gabriel River Freeway were escorted off the Pomona Freeway by the CHP.
