California battery plant catches fire, forcing evacuations

A fire at a battery plant in Moss Landing, California forced evacuations in the area.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at the Moss Landing Power Plant at around 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 16.

After 5 p.m., residents in the area were told to evacuate due to the fire. Local authorities – the Monterey County Sheriff's Office – issued evacuation orders for parts of Moss Landing and added that roads were closed near the former power plant.

According to a report from KTVU-TV, a FOX-affiliate station, impacted residents were told to close their windows and doors due to the fire. A separate alert in Santa Cruz County urged the public to stay indoors, keep the windows and doors shut, and turn off ventilation systems, KTVU reports.
