PORT HUENEME, Calif. (FOX 11) - A 7-year-old is fighting for her life and her pregnant mother was also wounded following a drive-by shooting at their Port Hueneme home Tuesday night.
The shooting happened near the intersection of Ponoma and Pearl streets around 10:15 p.m. steps away from a Ventura County Fire Department fire station.
Firefighters noted the extremity of the child's injuries and rushed her to a hospital. She was identified by her grandmother as Kaylanna Davis.
Her mother suffered minor to moderate injuries in the shooting and was listed in stable condition, officials said.
There was a delay in response because officials needed to determine if the 911 caller heard gunshots or fireworks, said police.
The shooting is under investigation but officials do not believe it was a random act of violence, according to Chief Andrew Salinas with the Port Hueneme Police Department.
Fire officials are also investigating how emergency crews responded to the 911 calls.
