High surf sweeps away Long Beach boardwalk, damages home
Destructive waves battered the Long Beach waterfront on Friday, causing significant damage to the Alamitos Peninsula boardwalk and waterfront homes. Driven by morning high tides and incoming swells from Tropical Storm Rachel, the severe coastal flooding led city officials to red-tag two structures and yellow-tag three others. With a coastal flood warning in effect through Sunday and waves expected to reach up to 7 feet, authorities are actively distributing sandbags and urging residents to avoid the coastline, warning that the worst ocean conditions may still be ahead.
