LASD deputies ambushed in East LA; suspect dead

A suspect is dead after Los Angeles County deputies were ambushed in East Los Angeles.

An alleged armed suspect is dead after Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were ambushed in East Los Angeles early Wednesday morning, officials said.

What we know:

LA County sheriff's officials said the incident began with a 911 call in the 1400 block of South Downey Road, near the intersection of Triggs Street, just before 2 a.m.

When deputies arrived, authorities said they were met with gunfire. The shots were so intense they pinned down two deputies. As the rounds continued, the East Los Angeles station deployed a BearCat armored vehicle to shield the deputies and move them to safety.

Investigators said a relative of the suspect was home at the time of the shooting.

Eventually, deputies returned fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported. 

What we don't know:

It is unclear if the suspect was killed by deputies’ gunfire or died by suicide.

The name of the suspect has not been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
