Jayden Adams’ cause of death

What we know:

The South African Football Players Union announced Adams’ death on social media.

What they’re saying: "Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction," the union wrote. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large.

"It has robbed our nation of a remarkable footballer, but it will never take away the legacy Jayden Adams leaves behind. We will forever remember his humility, his extraordinary talent and the pride with which he represented South Africa.

"Rest in eternal peace, Jayden. You will never be forgotten."

What we don't know:

His cause of death has not been released.

"Cape Town Central police registered an Inquest for investigation following the discovery of the body of a 25-year-old male on Saturday, 2026-07-11 at 11:06 at a premises in Military Road, Scotscheskloof," Western Cape South African Police Service spokesperson F.C. van Wyk told ESPN.

Jayden Adams’ life

The backstory:

Adams began his soccer career with a professional contract in August 2020 after completing Stellenbosch FC’s club academy. He started in South Africa’s World Cup 2026 matches against Mexico and the Czech Republic, then played as a substitute against South Korea. He was an unused substitute when South Africa lost to Canada.

Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sports, arts and culture, said Adams had a "depth of character and professionalism well beyond his years."

"The cause of Jayden's passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time," McKenzie said in a statement shared on X. "Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course.

"On behalf of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, I extend my deepest condolences to Jayden's family, his young daughter, his teammates at Mamelodi Sundowns, his fellow Bafana Bafana players and coaching staff, the South African Football Association, and the entire football fraternity."
