The South Fire is about 70% contained as firefighters are in the mop-up-duty stage of taking it down.

Ventura County Fire Department personnel on Tuesday contained a brush fire burning over the last three days along the ridgeline and south side of South Mountain, in the Somis area.

In Cal Fire's final update, officials reported that the fire had burned 2,715 acres.

The fire broke out on the morning of Dec. 9. Officials said they were able to make quick progress on the blaze because the South Fire was burning in the same footprint as the 2019 Maria Fire.

At the fire's peak, more than 100 homes were affected by evacuation orders. By Sunday night, all evacuation orders, warnings and road closures had been lifted.

The American Red Cross had opened a temporary evacuation point at Ventura Community College on Telegraph Road for all evacuees.

Over 100 fire personnel and 10 aircraft worked to fight the fire, according to authorities.
