405 Fwy back open after deadly crash

One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the 405 Freeway and an investigation is underway Friday.

A high-speed collision involving a minivan and a Caltrans vehicle left one person dead late Thursday night, triggering a major investigation and an hours-long closure of the 405 Freeway in Irvine.

What we know:

According to Caltrans, the crash happened around 11 p.m. on the southbound 405 Freeway at the MacArthur Boulevard on-ramp.

Officials said a minivan was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a concrete barrier along the right shoulder, then collided with a Caltrans truck that was working within a construction zone.

Paramedics from the Orange County Fire Authority arrived on the scene and pronounced one person dead. 

Caltrans said one contractor was injured in the collision.

A SigAlert was issued shortly after the incident, closing the transition road from the southbound 55 Freeway to the southbound 405 for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

The identity of the victim has not been released. 

What they're saying:

"This serves as a reminder to all drivers to slow down and move over when approaching construction zones and Caltrans maintenance operations on our state highway system. Our thoughts are with the contractor who was injured while working on behalf of Caltrans and everyone impacted in this incident," Caltrans said in a statement.

The CHP will continue its investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
