Newsom signs 'Braun's Law': Tougher California DUI penalties

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed "Braun's Law" (SB 907) alongside a broader legislative package designed to crack down on repeat drunk drivers and lower traffic fatalities across the state.  Named in honor of Braun Levi, an 18-year-old killed by a suspected repeat offender, the new law requires courts to issue formal warnings to DUI defendants—even if their charges are reduced—making it significantly easier for prosecutors to file second-degree murder charges if they cause a fatal crash in the future.
