Woman arrested after vandalizing monument in Glendale

A woman has been arrested after police say she vandalized the Korean Comfort Woman Monument in Glendale’s Central Park.

65-year-old Jackie Rita Williams has been booked into the Glendale City jail and charged with felony vandalism.

Glendale police say she was also arrested for a currant warrant that was issued for vandalism outside of the City of Glendale.

Police say the monument was vandalized several times in the past few months, with the latest incident being September 26.

The Glendale Police Department says their detectives are now trying to determine if Williams is responsible for other vandalism that happened in the past few weeks on East Colorado Blvd. Police say they have received reports of derogatory statements written on walls, bus stops, and benches.

With cooperation from the Korea-Glendale Sister City Association the monument was installed in July 2013, and was paid and maintained by the Korean American Forum of California.

“This arrest is another great example of the fine investigative work by the Glendale Police Department who takes matters such as this very seriously. We are fortunate to have a Police Department that fully engages in and takes care of our community," said Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian in a statement online.
