Trump rants about Nobel Peace Prize snub

President Trump, while campaigning for the midterms at a rally in New York, spent several minutes ranting about the Nobel Peace Prize. He said he deserved to win the award, but instead it was given to a "nobody."

President Donald Trump went on a long rant at a campaign rally Friday night about the Nobel Peace Prize going to a "liberal person who nobody has ever heard of" instead of himself.

Trump, who has long sought a Nobel Peace Prize, made the lengthy comments at what was supposed to be an event promoting Bruce Blakeman, the Republican nominee in the race for New York governor.

What they're saying:

"The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn't," Trump said at the rally. "And this is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision.

"The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization," he continued. "And we will not forget, Norway."

Trump continued his rant in a late-night post on Truth Social, again claiming that he’s ended eight wars.

"In actuality, I should have won 8 Nobel Peace Prizes, not just 1," he wrote.

Why does Trump want a Nobel Peace Prize?

Dig deeper:

Trump’s desire for a Nobel Peace Prize dates back to his first term. He has repeatedly complained that he’ll never get the prize despite everything he’s done, like "preventing, on a constant basis, that war between South Korea and North Korea, and Japan and North Korea, and China and Taiwan …  and numerous other hotspots which have not been involved in wars."

"Only because of a gentleman known as President Donald J. Trump of the United States," he said Friday night.

In text messages Trump sent to Norway’s prime minister in January, he said his aggressive push for the U.S. to acquire Greenland was in direct response to him not being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year.

"Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace," he wrote.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado presented Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize when they met in the White House in January, but Nobel officials said at the time that the prize is still not his.

Venezuela's Machado presents Trump with Nobel Peace Prize medal

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said she presented President Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize medal at Thursday’s meeting at the White House. She noted Trump’s "unique commitment with our freedom."

Nobel committee responds

The other side:

Jørgen Watne Frydnes, who chairs the Norwegian Nobel Committee that awards the prizes, told The Washington Post that the awarding committee is independent of the Norwegian government. The only requirement is to fulfill the criteria laid out in the will of Alfred Nobel.

The honor, according to Nobel’s wishes, is given to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

"The point of this prize is it goes to a person who with courage and integrity has led the way towards a more comprehensive global legal order, and that is the direction our societies and the world should go into if we want a more peaceful society," Frydnes said.

Who won this year's Nobel Peace Prize?

The backstory:

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner is Navi Pillay, a South African-born jurist and former U.N. human rights chief whose career has spanned from defending the rights of an imprisoned Nelson Mandela to leading a panel that found that Israel committed genocide in Gaza.

Trump described Pillay as "a liberal person who works at the United Nations who nobody has ever heard of."
