LIVE: Norte Fire in San Clemente threatens homes, forces evacuations

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. - Orange County firefighters are battling a fast-moving brush fire in San Clemente, where wind and rugged terrain threaten homes and have forced immediate evacuations. 

Emergency crews are mounting an aggressive attack using ground handlines and water-dropping aircraft to protect nearby neighborhoods.

What we know:

The brush fire broke out around noon in the area of Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte in San Clemente, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

At last check, the fire was estimated at 465 acres, with wind and local terrain accelerating its progress, officials said. 

Structures off Via Entrada are actively threatened by the advancing flames, according to authorities.

Authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders for the following zones:

• SCL12
• SCL13
• SJC04
• SJC05
• SJC10

Evacuation shelters

• San Juan Capistrano Community Center, 25925 Camino del Avion, San Juan Capistrano
• San Clemente Community Center 100 Calle Seville, San Clemente

What we don't know:

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.

Officials have not yet confirmed the exact number of structures directly threatened or damaged, nor have they released containment estimates as ground and air resources continue to arrive on scene.

Firefighters will maintain ground and air operations to establish containment lines and protect structures off Via Entrada.
