What to know about listeria

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Listeriosis is an infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a health alert for certain ready-to-eat meals.

The meals were produced by FreshRealm and sold by the popular meal plan brands Blue Apron and Marley Spoon.

Alerted items:

The following FreshRealm products are subject to the public health alert:

  • Sold by Blue Apron: 13.05-oz. plastic tray packages labeled "DISH by Blue Apron Cheesy Chicken Mac with Vegetables" with lot codes 25240 and 25247. The product bears establishment number "P-3081."
  • Sold by Marley Spoon: 10.5-oz. packages labeled "BALANCE by Marley Spoon BBQ Sauce Beef Meatballs with Cheesy Cauliflower" with lot code 25255.  The product bears establishment number "Est. 47718."

Reason for alert:

The problem was discovered when FreshRealm notified FSIS that the riced cauliflower used in these products tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase, but a health alert was issued because the products may still be in customers’ refrigerators or freezers. 

Why you should care:

Listeria are bacteria that cause infection that can be especially harmful to pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. 

Symptoms usually start within 2 weeks after eating contaminated food, and include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headache, or stiff neck, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What you can do:

These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

No reports of illness have been confirmed after eating these products. The product included in the health alert is not related to any ongoing outbreak investigations.
