Students and faculty at Newton Middle School in Hacienda Heights are mourning the sudden death of 13-year-old Felipe Andres De La Cruz, an eighth grader who died Saturday on a soccer field in Westminster while playing in a soccer tournament.

His coach said the right back was having a stellar game and asked to take a break the second half. He collapsed 30 seconds after sitting on the bench.

He played for the Strikers FC North team and loved soccer, traveling an hour twice a week to practices and was always on time.

He was a straight A student who loved math and science. His parents said he didn't have a heart problem and there were no warning signs before the collapse.

Fellow classmates described him as a positive person who was always smiling and in a good mood.

The family is planning a funeral after Sept. 5. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help out with expenses.
