'She had a future': 20-year-old woman identified by family as victim in Compton hit-and-run

Family members of a woman killed in a Compton hit-and-run identify her as 20-year-old Jennifer Lopez.

"I hear somebody saying 'help me, help me,'" said nearby resident Doris Summerville.

The crash happened on Monday night near the intersection of Compton Boulevard and Bullis Road, just east of Long Beach Boulevard. Firefighters used the jaws of life to extricate the woman from the mangled vehicle, but she was pronounced dead on the scene.

The victim's cousin Ivonne Guzman said the family wants justice.

"She was just a happy person inside and she was a young girl. She had a future. She barely started her job at Centinela Hospital. Whoever saw the person leave, let us know. If you're watching this, we're hurt," said Guzman.

Guzman said Lopez recently started a new job at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood in March and was preparing to celebrate her 21st birthday next month.

Surveillance video from a business near the intersection shows the suspect vehicle speeding through a stop sign, before striking the victims vehicle. The driver fled the scene before deputies arrived. A detailed description of the driver was not immediately available. Anyone with information to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
