Suspect accused of random shooting arrested after brief standoff

SOUTH LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11 / CNS) - A man allegedly fired shots and then barricaded himself in a home in South Los Angeles this afternoon, prompting police to cordon off the area until he was taken into custody nearly two hours later.

The shooting was reported about 2:10 p.m. in the area of Western Avenue and 42nd Street in the Vermont Square area, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

An officer in the area on an unrelated call reportedly heard shots and was approached by fleeing people. The suspect was described as a 38- to 40-year-old man who apparently lives in the 4100 block of Western Avenue.

There were no immediate reports of anyone being struck by gunfire, but police established a wide perimeter around the man's home, and he surrendered about 4 p.m. without further incident, according to LAPD Officer Sal Ramirez.

Buses were detoured around the area and the public was advised to stay away during the standoff.
