Suspect shot dead after grabbing LAPD officer's taser at 24-Hour Fitness in Hollywood

A man was killed Monday in an officer-involved shooting in the locker room of a 24-Hour Fitness gym and an officer suffered minor injuries in the altercation, police said.

There were terrifying moments as gunshots rang out inside the men's locker room at the 24 Hour Fitness in Hollywood, located on the 6300 block of W Sunset Boulevard.

"I heard like pop, pop, pop," said Gerald, a witness at the scene.

Gerald says he was inside the steam room when gun shots rang out. "When I heard the shots I thought that somebody came in there and try to kill people so I was like 'he's not about to come in the steam room' so I just stayed in the steam room."

When LAPD arrived, investigators say a physical altercation took place between the man and the responding officers. Detective Meghan Aguilar said, "It is believed that an individual was able to gain control of one of the officers tasers. At that point, there was an officer involved shooting."

The suspect was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. There were two responding officers, and one officer was taken to an area hospital with moderate injuries.

The name of the suspect was withheld pending notification of his family.
