Man wanted for Carson killing arrested in Mexico, teen and her mother still missing

A man wanted in connection to a homicide in Carson that occurred in April 2019 and believed to be traveling with a 15-year-old girl and her mother has been arrested in Mexico.

Authorities said 39-year-old Roman Cerratos was taken into custody on June 13 for the violent killing of Jeffrey Appel, 32, whose body was discovered in his Audi in the 400 block of East Carson Plaza Drive.

An Amber Alert was issued for 15-year-old Alora Benitez whose mother, 40-year-old Maricela Mercado, is also suspected in the heinous killing. Neither the teen nor her mother were with Cerratos at the time of his arrest.

Cerratos is being extradited to the U.S. to face criminal charges. Authorities continue looking for the 15-year-old and Mercado.
