Police: Armed man barricaded in DTLA building surrenders peacefully

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11) - An armed suspect barricaded for four hours Monday in a Downtown Los Angeles building called police and said he wanted to surrender peacefully, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD said he was in an apartment with another person. It was unclear what their relationship was, but it appeared he sought refuge in the person's home after firing shots at a vehicle around 12 p.m. on Santee Street, police said.

No one was hit by the gunfire and the vehicle kept moving on, so police weren't able to speak to the driver and find out if he or she knew the suspect. Officers were told the suspect went inside a nearby building so they searched it floor by floor until he called to surrender.

Dozens of businesses were impacted by several streets in the area being closed off. There were also hundreds of residents who weren't able to get into their homes.

One of those people wasn't even sure if what was happening was real.

"I'm confused because yesterday they were shooting a car commercial right here. It was almost the same scene. The road was blocked. Cops with traffic and stuff. So we thought it was a TV commercial but there was a real incident going on. So it was a little concerning. So police said there was a shooting, and we said there was a shooting here yesterday. And they were like 'What"?" said neighbor Rick Dallago.

LAPD said they will still continue investigating the area through the evening. They believe the man tossed his gun to another building's roof, so they are still looking for that weapon.
