Canter’s grandfather Ben and Ben’s two brothers opened Canter’s Deli in Boyle Heights in 1931. It was moved to the Fairfax District in the 1950s, and it quickly became a popular hangout. Gary Canter recently opened two restaurants in Las Vegas. There are no plans at the moment to hold a memorial at the restaurant.
