Firefighters battled 3rd alarm fire at 99 cents store in Hawthorne

A three-alarm fire tore through a 99 Cents Only store in Hawthorne this afternoon.

The blaze was reported at 3:34 p.m. at 11811 S. Hawthorne Blvd., according to Capt. Keith Mora of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Flames leapt through the building's roof, which partially collapsed.

A third alarm was requested so initial responders could be relieved as the firefight continued, Mora said.

Surrounding buildings, including a CVS store and a Payless shoe store, were evacuated as a precaution, Mora said.

Crews were still pouring water on the building as of 6 p.m., but open flames were no longer visible.

No injuries were reported.
