Family demands justice after Barstow police shoot unarmed black man

The family of 26 year-old Diante Yarber - shot and killed by Barstow police- is seeking justice.

Preliminary results of an independent autopsy reveal the unarmed black man was shot at least 10 times during a confrontation with police on April 5th in a Barstow Walmart parking lot.

The family's attorney Lee Merritt says the report found the injuries to be defensive wounds. There were injuries to his arms, chest, and back as if he was shielding himself from an onslaught of bullets.

Police officers surrounded Yarber at a Walmart parking lot reportedly to question him about a recent crime involving a stolen vehicle - when he backed up and struck one of the patrol cars, then accelerated and hit another police vehicle. That's when the gunfire erupted. Civil rights attorney Dale Galipo, who represents two of the backseat passengers in that car, questions the police officers' tactics pointing out that in addition to opening fire into a car with other passengers who were also struck and injured, this all happened in broad daylight in a Walmart parking lot with people walking nearby who could've also been struck by gunfire.

Galipo also question why no medical attention was given after the father of 3 was shot. Yarber's family and attorneys are insisting the names of the officers involved be released.

Funeral services for Diante Yarber will be held in Barstow on Friday.
