Carjacking suspect shot with rubber bullets after chase in Long Beach

A man was in custody Thursday after he assaulted a Long Beach police officer and took his gun, and then carjacked a vehicle and led authorities on a pursuit, officials said.

The 27-year-old Long Beach man was arrested late Wednesday night near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Seventh Street, police said He was treated at a hospital for minor injures, and was expected to be booked on various offenses, including carjacking and assault.

About 10 p.m. Wednesday, an officer went to the area of 10th Street and Stanley Avenue on a "suspicious person'' call, said Long Beach police spokesperson Arantxa Chavarria.

"He made contact with a male adult subject and detained him while he investigated a possible stolen vehicle,'' Chavarria said. "During the incident, the officer was assaulted, there was a struggle, and the suspect was able to take the officer's firearm.''

The suspect then ran off and carjacked a vehicle several blocks away, and he led police on a pursuit that went to the area of Martin Luther King Avenue and Seventh Street, Chavarria said.

"The suspect barricaded himself in the vehicle and SWAT was activated,'' Chavarria said. "At that time an officer-involved shooting occurred.'' No one was hit by the gunfire.

A police dog assisted in taking the suspect into custody. The officer who originally struggled with the suspect was treated for unspecified injuries.
