Burglar flees Irvine home after babysitter startles him

Police released surveillance video images of a burglar who broke into an Irvine home, but was scared off by a babysitter.

The burglar smashed a rear sliding-glass door to gain entry to the home in the 20 block of Royal Grove in the Woodbury neighborhood about 12:20 p.m. Monday, said Kim Mohr of the Irvine Police Department. When the babysitter returned to the home with a child at 12:37 p.m., the would-be thief ran out of
the residence, she said.

The suspect was described as black, about 18 to 25 years old and weighing about 170 pounds, with black hair, Mohr said. He was wearing a long- sleeve, blue-and-white shirt with the number 3 on one sleeve, black Adidas sweatpants with white stripes down the side, blue tennis shoes and blue gloves and carrying a backpack that was blue with white polka dots on it.

Anyone with information about his identity was asked to call Detective Jameson Roberts at (949) 727-7170, or email him at jroberts@irvinepd.org.
