Body of missing 15-year-old found at business in Compton

Authorities are investigating after the body of a missing 15-year-old was found Monday on the grounds of a business in Compton.

Authorities initially said that the body of a young girl believed to be 15-20 years old was discovered shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday on the grounds of a business located in the 400 block of Victoria Street.

The L.A. County Coroner's Office has confirmed the body is that of 15-year-old Samantha Bustos Vital who went missing on Friday. She was a resident of Compton.

Bustos' family formally reported her missing on Sunday, 48-hours after she was last seen on Caldwell Street in Compton. According to her family, the teen told her mother she was going to a sleepover with her best friend, but they had actually gone to a party.

The L.A. Sheriff's Department said the body showed signs of having suffered a traumatic injury to the upper torso. The cause of that traumatic injury is currently unknown.

The cause of death will be released by the Coroner's Office.

The sheriff's department is investigating the case as a "suspicious death," however, the Coroner's Office ruled the death a homicide.

Authorities are reportedly working with the business where the body was found to obtain security video that could help them in this investigation.

Anyone with information on this case is urged to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

The motive and suspect information is unknown at this time. The investigation is ongoing. A vigil for the teen is planned for Monday at 7 p.m.

No further details were immediately known.

A GoFundMe account has been set up by Samantha's uncle, Jose Bautista, to help the family with funeral expenses.
