Apple admits to public: Yep, we are slowing down your old iPhones

(FOX 11) - It's not just your imagination...your iPhone really does slow down, as it becomes outdated.

This speed sucking feature applies to older model phones that are updated with new software.
Apple started the slow down feature last year when it rolled out the 7, and of course it happens again as newer models are released.

An Apple spokesperson said: "Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components. Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices."

Apple says this slow down feature applies to the iPhone 6, 6 plus, 6s, SE and the 7. Apple says it's needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down.

People on social media responded quickly...and they are not happy.

For some iPhone owners, the solution is this: The battery of older iPhones may be updated instead of purchasing a brand new device.

Apple charges $79 to replace the battery that's no longer covered by a warranty.
