Another horse dies at Santa Anita race track

ARCADIA, Calif. (FOX 11) - Another horse has died at the Santa Anita Park race track.

Commander Coil, suffered a shoulder injury while galloping during training on May 17, race track officials said. The 3-year-old gelding was later euthanized.

A Santa Anita Park spokesman released a statement on behalf of race track officials that reads in part:

"Equine shoulder injuries are rare, especially for a horse that is galloping as opposed to breezing or racing. A comprehensive evaluation will be completed to understand what might have caused this uncommon injury."

"The Stronach Group remains committed to operating Santa Anita Park with stringent protocols that prioritize the health and safety of horses and riders first and foremost. Since reforms were introduced on March 15, there have been over 80,000 gallops during training with no fatalities."

Friday's death marks the 24th fatality since December.
