Advocate for ending violence among 2 found dead inside Newport Beach condo

A violent end to the life of a woman who dedicated herself to preventing violence and protecting children.

Wendi Miller, 48, and her friend, 38-year-old Darren Partch were found murdered in a Newport Beach condo on Monday, April 22.

Miller started Wings for Justice, a Newport non-profit that advocates for children in court and brings about positive change. She also helped battered women and veterans get jobs. Family and friends say she was a beautiful soul.

"I know the sweet, loving, warm, wonderful woman that she was and it's hard to say she 'was,'" said her close friend and neighbor Terri Rawson. "I can't even wrap my head around the fact that she's gone."

Friends say they last saw Miller and Partch, a minor-league hockey player, leaving a Laguna Beach bar early Saturday. Partch's roommate found their bodies at his condo in the 2100 block of East 15th Street when he came home after the Easter-holiday weekend. Police say there was no forced entry.

Investigators are still looking for a suspect and motive but they do not believe there is an on-going threat to the community.
