14-year-old killed, younger sister in critical condition after being stuck by vehicle in south L.A.

A 14-year-old girl died on Thursday after she and her 12-year-old sister were struck by a commercial vehicle while walking to school in Exposition Park, authorities said.

Firefighters responded to the incident near the intersection of Broadway Place and 37th Street, just north of Exposition Boulevard, around 7:56 a.m.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a big rig truck hit two sisters, ages 12 and 14. The truck driver was heading west on 37th Street and struck the girls while making a right turn. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, authorities said. No arrest has been made. The circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately known.

The girls, who have not been identified, were transported to the hospital in critical condition, officials said. The 14-year-old was pronounced dead a short time later.
