U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds flying this weekend in Huntington Beach

Some of the Air Force's top pilots will be putting on quite a show in Orange County this weekend.

The Air Force Thunderbirds will be the star attraction of the Great Pacific Airshow in Huntington Beach.

The show runs from October 19-21 and can be seen near the Huntington Beach from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Thunderbirds is a team that's dedicated to showcasing the pride, precision and professionalism of the U.S. Air Force," said Major Ray Geoffrey.

The team spends a great deal of time with young potential aviators.

"To see something incredible and maybe spark a dream in them. Maybe to be a pilot, an astronaut or just to work on planes,"

"If you're looking to have a cool beach day, this is a great time to check it out," said Geoffrey.

To preview the show, the Thunderbirds invited "Good Day L.A." and "The Issue Is:" host Elex Michaelson to take the ride of his life.

"What you're getting today is a demonstration of everything it takes behind the scenes to make a flight happen," said Geoffrey.

Michaelson was given his own flight suit and trained in breathing and emergency procedures.

The team even put his name on an F-16 jet flown by Major Eric "Miami" Gorney.

After several hours of briefings, it was time for take off.

Michaelson flew over the Pacific Ocean and observed spectacular views of Long Beach, Huntington Beach and much of Orange County.

Flying near Andrews Air Force base, Gorney was able to perform several of the maneuvers that the Thunderbirds exhibit in the show.

Somehow, Michaelson didn't throw up -- though he certainly looked queasy at times.

Afterwards, he described it as one of the greatest stories of his life.

The Thunderbirds pilots are the elite of the elite. Each has flown more than 700 hours in combat jets.

In air shows, they often fly within 18 inches of each other. Their planes can fly twice the speed of sound.
