Council to consider flying rainbow pride flag on Anaheim city flagpoles

ANAHEIM, Calif. (FOX 11) - Will the rainbow pride flag be flown at Anaheim City Hall? The answer could come Tuesday at a city council meeting.

Under current rules, only the city, state and national flags are permitted to be hoisted on a flagpole at city hall.

The issue first came to light in 2016 when council voted to raise the pride flag in support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community after the shooting deaths of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando.

During Pride Month the following June, officials learned that this technically wasn't allowed. As a compromise, officials hung the rainbow flag on the side of city hall on May 22 through the end of June in both 2017 and 2018.

While Anaheim City Councilman Jordan Brandman wants to see the existing flag rule corrected, some worry that this would open the floodgates to any group wanting to have its flag recognized by the city.

If the change is approved by city council, the flag would be hoisted below one of the three that are currently flying during Pride Month only.

The council meets at 5 p.m. Tuesday and was scheduled to debate the issue during its meeting.
