2 caretakers killed in Exposition Park house fire

Two people died following a house fire in Exposition Park located steps away from the LA Memorial Coliseum early Thursday morning, authorities said. 

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire coming from the home on Leighton and Vermont avenues around 12:45 a.m. The home served as a boarding home and mental health care facility. 

Multiple patients scrambled to leave the house and informed rescue crews their caretakers inside.

Rescue crews pulled a person in grave condition from the home and located a second victim near the back door. The two victims were rushed to the hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries 

The two victims were siblings and caregivers for the patients who were able to escape.  

They were identified by neighbors as George McGruder and Yoland McGruder. 

At least eight adults and four children were displaced by the house fire. The Red Cross was assisting those who were displaced. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
