El Niño: On track with records possible and still growing

- Now it looks like the strongest El Niño we've seen since the nineties is on its way. The latest satellite image released by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, closely resembles the one from December 1997.

It shows nearly identical higher-than-normal body of warm water building up below the surface of the tropical Pacific. Meteorologists say there is more energy stored up underwater now than at this point in 1997.

If it stays that way...it could mean a major El Niño event, weather havoc worldwide and possibly new high-temperature records.

El Niño is currently unfolding in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean, and it's impact here is expected in early 2016.
