LOS ANGELES (CNS / FOX 11) - In a race overshadowed by the death of two horses earlier in the day, Santa Anita-based Exaggerator upset Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist to win the 141st Preakness Stakes Saturday at the Pimlico Race Course in
It was the first loss for Nyquist, who is also based at Santa Anita, and prevented the 3-year-old colt from making a bid for horse racing's Triple Crown at next month's Belmont Stakes.
Exaggerator finished second to Nyquist at the Kentucky Derby earlier this month.
The day of racing on a muddy track had a tragic start when two horses died and a jockey broke his collarbone in preliminary races.
According to The Associated Press, 4-year-old filly Pramedya fell during a turn, injuring jockey Daniel Centeno, and had to be euthanized.
In the opening race, 9-year-old gelding Homeboykris won and had his picture taken in the winner's circle, but collapsed and died minutes later.
