Lots of opinions at Santa Anita on how the race will go. Most with American Pharoah winning. If that happens it will be the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years since Affirmed.
Racehorse owner Ron Perry thinks American Pharoah (AP for short) will "sit around and he'll be close to the lead and when it comes time to go down that big Belmont stretch... he'll drop the hammer!" Like he did, says Perry, during the Kentucky Derby and then the Preakness.
"He just appears to be a freak of nature," says Mike Wellman. Wellman works in Santa Anita's Publicity Department, but he also has his own racing radio show. He says AP has great range of motion and world class sprinter speed which he's demonstrated more than once. Says Willman, whose a horse owner himself, "He's just a specimen! He's big... 15 hands and as I say he gets accross the ground with consummate ease." A perfect candidate, says Willman for the Triple Crown
Savannah Sky's trainer Richard Baltas isn't so sure. He says, "I've seen it too many times Smarty Jones looked like he was going to win it..." California Chrome? is another one."
To some American Pharoah's run-up of wins is remarkable considering last year he bruised the inside of his hoof. This is another horse, but on this one is a shoe made by Wes Champagne that he gave to help the hoof Champagne has given American Pharoah a shoe with protection and a shoe-in to win the Triple Crown...
Champagne says, "He's going into it 100%. He hasn't lost a pound. He wasn't pressured in the Preakness."
The race is Saturday.
