The Girl Scout Cookie Sale Is ON!

(FOX 11) - "Me want cookie!"

Doesn't the Girl Scout Cookie sale bring out the cookie monster in all of us! As a Scout back in the day, I say buy, buy, buy! Now with online shopping and three new flavors, the cookie craze is on.

Sales start February first with the traditional Thin Mint to new flavors for 2015. To meet the gluten free taste trend, the scouts added Trios, a gluten-free peanut butter oatmeal cookie, and Toffee-tastics, a gluten-free butter cookie with toffee pieces. A third add is Rah-Rah Raisins, an oatmeal cookie with Greek yogurt chips.

Cookie sales went nationwide as a fundraiser back in 1936. Flavors have come and gone. Remember Vanilla and Chocolate Sandwich Creams? How I loved Lemon Cremes! I had no taste for Trefoils, but fell in love with some of the adds. I store Samoas in the freezer and tackle Tagalongs head-on. "Me eat cookie!"

As a pre-teen Scout I recall the good ol' days when we walked door to door selling cookies. My parents were never the type to take my form to work to boost my sales. So I was never the cookie sale winner, much to my chagrin. However, I did feel a strong sisterhood with my girls in green. These days, I'm less likely to get a knock at the door and more likely to be sucked into the sale when going to my local grocery store. Really, how many times can you walk past that table and those sweet faces. "Me buy cookie."

Per Time Magazine the announcement of the new varieties "comes as the Girl Scouts were at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, showing off "Digital Cookie," a new program to enable youngsters to sell cookies online while learning marketable business and technology skills." Leave it to "my girls" to go modern and get tech savvy.

I do say "my girls" with great pride. I'd forgotten those days of long-ago until I emceed a big luncheon last December. It was the "To Get Her There" luncheon in Hollywood. One hundred top local scouts in high school were invited to a mentor day in which they were addressed by their national leader, Girl Scouts of the USA CEO, Anna Maria Chavez. Her passion invoked emotion and I welled up inside. She brought back memories of the leadership teachings, the skill building, the badges we worked to earn. I proudly showed off my green felt Girl Scout vest. Sewn on, are the camping badge, the cooking badge, the swimming badge, and many in which I no longer recall what they stand for.

Approximately 59 million women in the U.S. today are Girl Scout alumnae. The Watts community took on a troop for the first time just a few years ago. Then, there are the famous faces, Taylor Swift, Lisa Ling, Hillary Clinton, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. At the luncheon, Robin McGraw, Dr. Phil's wife was honored. She's the national celebrity spokeswoman, keeping more than cookies on the map!

To this sisterhood, I say we toast, with a glass of milk, and of course, a cookie! I'll take three Thin Mint, and a box of Savannahs!
