For example, the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District will be hiring more people to be, essentially, water police. Their job will be to look for people being irresponsible with water like letting it run down streets and hosing down sidewalks.
This is a district that has been ordered by the state to cut 36%. So, the squeeze will be on this summer to get its 70,000 customers, young and old, to conserve.
We met one youngster who seems to understand the drought better than a lot of adults. Her name is Jialian Mackey. When you ask her "What do you know about water?" She says, "California is in a very serious drought." Not exactly what you would expect from a 10-year-old.

Says Mackey, "I think most people don't realize how bad the drought really is and, I think they really really need to know the drought is a serious problem."
She certainly does. Like her older sister, she Loves nature...the outdoors. According to her mom, that may be why she is so acutely tuned into the California Water Crisis. Her parents are also big on conserving. The whole family carefully washes hands, brush teeth and shower with as little water as possible. Well, they could change to low-flow shower heads and cut a couple of minutes off of those showers, but the bottom line is that they are working at it.
Jialian says, "I turn off the water when I'm brushing my teeth and only turn it on to rinse." The same goes for the rest of the family.
Now, the plan is to get rid of the grassy yard and go more drought friendly.
For 10-year-old Jialian Mackey, conservation is also about remember everything that lives on Planet Earth. "It's so easy to conserve water," she says, "and if you conserve water you can help protect all of those species that are in danger of dying out."
