Southwest flight to SF makes emergency landing in San Jose

SAN JOSE -- A Southwest Airlines flight made an emergency landing at Mineta San Jose International Airport Monday morning after smoke was reported in the cockpit.

Flight 346 reported mechanical difficulties while traveling to San Francisco International Airport and pilots were cleared to land in San Jose. The 737 was flying from Phoenix when pilots reported smoke in the cockpit. The aircraft landed in San Jose without incident around 11:20 am airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said.

The plane was able to taxi to a gate on its own power, according to Barnes. And no injuries were reported, she said. A spokesperson for Southwest said the pilot decided to divert because of an odor in the plane.

The flight was carrying 170 passengers and six crew members when the incident occurred. No injuries were reported. A passenger on the plane said the aircraft was delayed in Arizona because of an issue with the door. The passengers noticed a burning odor during the flight.

The incident occurred as the airport was announcing the launch of Inaugural nonstop flights from San Jose to Vancouver.

The flights through Air Canada last about two hours on average between the San Jose airport and Vancouver International Airport.
