Sea Lion Wanders Into Newport Beach Bar (PHOTOS)

(FOX 11) "We card everyone. No exceptions," reads the sign of a Newport Beach bar.  Does that mean sea lions too?

A sea lion pup apparently waddled from the beach and into the Beach Ball bar in Newport Beach just before 11 a.m. May 12. According to bar patrons, they blocked the entrance with chairs to keep him out while waiting for rescuers to come pick him up.

In the meantime, he was appropriately named Beach Ball.

The pup is currently being treated at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center for an eye infection.

A record number of sea lions have washed ashore on Southern California beaches this year due to warming water temperatures. According to experts, the rising water temperatures appear to be driving fish deeper out to sea, which forces sea lion mothers to go farther to find food.

As a result, the sea lion pups are unable to keep up and end up stranded and hungry.
