Police Pursue Narcotics Suspect In SUV; Suspect Is In Custody

The pursuit began at around 3:20 p.m. at Eighth Street and Central Avenue, where a narcotics officer tried to stop the suspect but he drove off, police said. Early in the chase, a woman got out of the Land Rover. It's unclear if she was taken into custody.

During the pursuit, police employed a PIT maneuver, spinning the Land Rover into a curb in Pico Rivera, but the driver stepped on the gas and drove off again.

Around 3:45 p.m., the suspect drove into a cul de sac in the 9800 block of Pico Vista Road in Downey. With no where to go, he pulled into a driveway at the end of the cul de sac and came to a stop. About a dozen officers took positions behind the vehicle, but the driver refused to come out.

Aerial television footage of the vehicle appeared to show the suspect sitting on the passenger's side of the SUV. There was no immediate indication that anyone else was in the Land Rover.

Police also took positions in the wash in front of the SUV, in case the suspect tried to ram a chain-link fence in an effort to escape. Reports from the scene indicated that the suspect may have been ingesting narcotics during the pursuit
