Pit bull found mangled with broken bones being nursed back to health

- A pit bull whose face was horribly mangled is found chained up outside DeKalb County Animal Control. Rescuers said she sat out there all night with half of her face missing, but thanks to a rescue group she's getting the medical attention she desperately needed. It's only been a week and she's making great improvements.

When employees at the DeKalb County Animal Control found the little pup chained up outside their facility her bones were broken and her face was mangled. She needed a lot of help which is why someone at the shelter reached out to Friends of the Forlorn Pitbull Rescue for help.

"I didn't know what I was looking at from the picture. I didn't know if the jawbone was there. I didn't know how bad it was. My first thought was I need to save that dog," said Jason Flatt who runs the non-profit which specializes in helping pit bulls

The images taken just after June was found are simply too graphic to share. She had undergone surgeries to reconstruct her face, her broken can’t be operated on until an infection clears, and the list of injuries goes on.

"The wounds, my vet and I, based on experience, believe came from another dog attacking her. Whether it's a dog fighting ring, who knows. I can't make that assumption. All I know is she has injuries conducive to dog fighting," Flatt said.

Foster, Sadie Lake, is the one caring for June as she goes through all the surgeries. Flatt said he couldn't do what he does without his volunteers who stepped up and help nurse back to health the injured ones.

"If you look at the pounds in the inner city Atlanta it's anywhere from 65 to 85 percent pit bulls at any given time. They're at critical levels and the amount of people who actually rescue pit bulls are far and few between, and the ones who are going to take them in that condition, without exploiting the animal are minimal," said Flatt.

Anyone who would like to help the non-profit, they are currently in a challenge that could win them $50,000, and they said every donation matters. Donations can be made here: crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/friendstotheforlorn
