Military K9 and His Handler 'Doing Well' after IED Blast in Afghanistan

A military K9 and his handler are recovering after they were injured in an IED blast in Afghanistan.

The 89th Military Police Brigade, which is based out of Fort Hood, Texas, shared a photo that has since gone viral on Facebook last week of military working dog "Rocky" lying on his side with a Purple Heart pinned to his collar.

Rocky and Army Spc. Andrew Brown were injured while searching a structure in support of ongoing operations in Afghanistan.

"Rocky and his handler are staying in the same room right now as they are receiving treatment for their injuries," the Facebook post said. "Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they recover during the holiday season.

The picture, posted on Wednesday, has been shared more than 130,000 times and has more than 99,000 likes.

Friday, the 89th Military Police Brigade shared some good news about the two.

"SPC Brown and Rocky are both doing well," the post said. "They are both very thankful for your thoughts and prayers and are in the process of heading back home. SPC Brown arrived early this morning to Walter Reed where he was met by his waiting family, and Rocky is expected to return to Fort Hood in the coming weeks."

Facebook user Breanna Katsonis commented on the first photo stating Rocky's handler is her brother-in-law.

"He and his wife have 2 young children and this is a difficult time for them all," Katsonis said. "I know they are so grateful for all of the prayers so please keep them coming!"

The 89th Military Police Brigade is a combat ready, deployable Military police force assigned to the United States Army Third Armored Corps "Phantom Warriors."

Please join us in thanking Rocky and SPC Brown for their service. Here's to wishing them both a speed recovery!
